The history of our parent company, Chennault Aviation, began a very long time ago (even before the First World War). General Claire Lee Chennault was a key figure aviation history, particularly during World War II, as the leader of the American Volunteer Group known as the Flying Tigers. He played a crucial role in the defense of China against Japanese aggression.
Chennault, a former U.S. Army Air Corps officer, was recruited by the Chinese government in 1937 to help modernize their air force. He quickly realized the need for a specialized group of skilled pilots and mechanics to combat the Japanese effectively. With the support of the Chinese government and approval from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Chennault formed the Flying Tigers in 1941.
The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer pilots who flew combat missions in the P-40 Warhawk fighter planes. They became known for their distinctive shark-faced aircraft and their impressive record of victories against Japanese forces. Despite facing overwhelming odds, the Flying Tigers were able to protect vital supply routes and provide crucial air support to Chinese ground forces.
General Chennault’s leadership and tactical innovations were instrumental in the success of the Flying Tigers. He developed unique strategies for aerial combat, such as the “wheeling attack” formation, which allowed his pilots to engage large Japanese formations effectively. Chennault’s emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and training also contributed to the Flying Tigers’ reputation as fierce and skilled fighters.
After the Flying Tigers' disbandment in 1942, Chennault continued to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces, eventually rising to major general. He remained a respected figure in military aviation and continuously advocated for air power as a crucial component of modern warfare.
General Chennault and the Flying Tigers played a significant role in shaping the history of aviation and military strategy which changed the outcome of WWII. Their bravery and dedication to defending China against Japanese aggression will always be remembered as a testament to the power of skilled pilots, mechanics, and effective leadership. Here at CAMA, we strive for the highest standards of integrity and professionalism as a heritage organization of the American Volunteer Group, The original Flying Tigers. To live up to the legacy of General Claire Lee Chennault and his Flying Tigers, CAMA must meet standards that exceed every other maintenance training operation in the civilian market. CAMA carries on the founder's legacy with maintenance training that meets the standards of excellence that made the Flying Tigers of WWII heros to Americans and the Chinese people.
